A Little About Radiant Barriers (IRCCS)
Heat flows into a building in three ways: conduction, convection and radiation. Radiation is the transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves known as thermal radiation. Thermal radiation is a form of invisible light that travels through the air from a warm to a cool surface. Studies show that up to 93% of the heat gain in a house is from radiant heat. When Lo/Mit is applied to your attic roof decking it reflects about 80% of that radiation right back out. It alone can reduce the temperature of your attic and save on cooling cost's, and when used in conjunction with proper ventilation, near ambient temperatures can be achieved. This can lower electricity bills by possibly eliminating the need for A/C in the spring and fall, and minimizing the strain on your cooling system during summer months. Lo/Mit is even effective in the winter by reflecting radiant heat back into the home.
Lo/Mit is water permeable and will not hide roof leaks like foil radiant barriers can. We are also less expensive than foil radiant barriers. Unlike foil barriers, Lo/Mit does not degrade over time. Lab samples over 15 years old still perform like new. This product will most likely outlast your house!! We also suggest that all of our customers provide proper ventilation for their attic space. Lo/Mit can control radiant heat loads, a fan controls convection heat loads. A solar attic vent fan will pull the hot air out of the attic and replace it with cooler outside air and not use any of your electricity.
